School of Wisdom® Series: Volume 2
RECOMMENDED READING
By R.C.L.
In addition to books already mentioned in the body Chance and Choice, we have found the works of the following authors to be particularly helpful: James Redfield, Joseph Campbell, Mircea Eliade, Carlos Castenada, Robert Ornstein, Jane Roberts, Lama Anagarika Govinda, W.Y. Evans-Wentz (editor), D.T. Suzuki, Philip Kapleau and Idries Shah. Other particular books not already mentioned here of note include, Flow by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, Windows of the Mind by Harold Glaskin, Shamanism by Micheal Harners and A Search In Secret India by Paul Brunton. We also recommend the quasi fiction-philosophy books of Robert Pirsig, Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance and his new book Lila.
There are a few important books by Native American authors which we recommend including, Black Elk by Wallace Black Elk, and Seven Arrows and Song of Heyoehkah by Hyemeyohsts Storm, to name but a few. Many of the books now available on the ancient wisdom teachings, shamanic traditions and aboriginal cultures bear further study. The latest to come into the open is from the Dagara tribe of West Central Africa through their spokes-persons Malidoma Somé and Sobonfu Somé. We highly recommend all of their books, tapes and workshops; but especially see Malidoma's autobiography of Water and the Spirit and his text The Healing Wisdom of Africa.
There are many more authors which have been of influence, too many to mention in this short, short list.
